IBPSA-NYC exists to advance and promote the science of building performance simulation in order to improve the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of new and existing building worldwide. It also seeks to act as a forum and a resource for those interested in performing and utilizing building simulation services. IBPSA is a non-profit international society of building performance simulation researchers, developers and practitioners, dedicated to improving the built environment.

Cheryl M. Saldanha | Simpson Gumpertz & Herger

Cheryl Saldanha, P.E., is a senior engineer at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger’s Building Technology group. She specializes in the design, evaluation, investigation, and renovation of building enclosure systems.  Her background is in building science, including computer simulations of buildings and building components.  She is adept at using multiple computer software packages to perform thermal and hygrothermal analyses of building details, and whole-building energy and daylighting analyses.  




Emir A. Pekdemir | Buro Happold Engineering

Emir leads the Computational Analysis team at BuroHappold Engineering in New York, providing integrated design solutions for healthier and better performing buildings using analytics. His toolkit includes dynamic energy and airflow modeling, hygrothermal modeling, daylight & glare simulations, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Having successfully completed projects with intricate façades and complex passive & mechanical systems, Emir is an active speaker/presenter in the world of building simulation.




Apoorv Goyal | HOK Architects

As the Sustainable Design Spec​ialist at HOK Architects, New York, Apoorv leads the architecture teams to integrate sustainability concepts in the early on in the design process. His expertise in performance analytic studies such as thermal analysis, daylight analysis, life cycle studies help inform core building and engineering decisions. Along with ensuring high performance standards in the proposed designs he works to reduce energy consumption, enhanced daylight and comfort, and reduced embodied energy in the overall lifecycle of the construction process.  He also helps in facilitation and documentation for LEED for various projects at HOK. As a passionate adopter of new technology, he takes active part in computational research projects both within the firm and outside refine to improve the workflow of sustainable design in the construction industry. Apoorv holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, India and a Master in Design Studies (Energy and Environment) degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design.


IBPSA’s mission is to advance and promote the science of building performance simulation in order to improve the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of new and existing buildings worldwide. To accomplish this mission, IBPSA host conferences, and the various IBPSA chapters host educational meetings and webinars to help encourage dialog and the sharing of knowledge.

Past Event - Designing and Modeling for Net Zero

Designing and Modeling for Net Zero

Completed in 2015, P.S. 62 is NYC’s first net-zero energy school, designed under the requirements of the New York City School Construction Authority. The 66,000 square foot, 2-story school will serve 440 pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students on Staten Island, NY. The building harvests as much energy from renewable on-site sources as it uses on an annual basis. The primary renewable energy system is a roof mounted photovoltaic array.

This presentation will discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by the design team, while working hand-in-hand with critical decision makers on the owner and user teams. The presentation will cover the schools design and how the energy modeling process evolve throughout the design. Establishing assumptions with user groups, making design decisions and ultimately establishing energy usage targets, critical to the Net Zero Goals of the school.

About the speaker :

Mr. Rios specializes in increasing energy efficiency within new and existing buildings. He is highly valued for his experience as a mechanical engineer and his expertise in energy modeling platforms. Jeff is a very collaborative member of the team, working closely with engineers, designers, and architects to provide thoughtful, results–focused solutions. He has shared his expertise at Greenbuild on WELL Building, at Urban Green on NYC Energy Codes, and as a continuing lecturer at Cooper Union. Jeff also serves as a member of the ACEC Metro Region Energy Code Committee as well as the NYC DOB Energy Code Advisory Committee.

Jack also has experience with renewable energy program management and interconnection policy with the electric utility, and is a Certified Renewable Energy Professional with the Association of Energy Engineers.
