In this webinar, Brendan Hall of CHA Consulting will show you how he used DesignBuilder to model and optimize the trade-off between the construction cost and operational energy consumption savings of a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system in a recent project.

GSHPs are often found at the heart of exceptionally energy-efficient HVAC systems, but generally require more capital to install than other system types. This increased cost, mostly due to the ground heat exchanger, can be a barrier to adoption. The payback period can be reduced dramatically when compared to less energy-efficient systems by intelligently combining additional energy conservation measures that reduce the building load and/or balance the annual heating and cooling loads. 

This presentation will show an analysis of the major contributors to energy use which were used to guide the selection of building improvements to reduce the size (and cost) of the geothermal bore field in a recent project. A genetic algorithm in DesignBuilder’s optimization module was used to evaluate several common energy conservation measures and determine which combinations of design options have the greatest potential to minimise the bore field size and operational energy consumption per construction dollar.
