This webinar presents a novel semantic representation and reasoning framework for use in enhancing emerging building applications such as fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), and commissioning (Cx). This framework will enable the semantic integration of heterogeneous data from domains such as occupancy, lighting, equipment, and utility for planning, operation, and management purposes. The presented framework employs a modular and scalable system architecture consisting of a library of ontologies that integrate data across domains. Semantic Web technologies and inference-based reasoning are the key to the framework’s implementation. Sample use cases from different domain applications will be presented. This framework is suitable for much-anticipated smart building Internet of Things (IOT) solutions.

Presenter:

Parastoo Delgoshaei is a research engineer in the Mechanical Systems and Controls group of the Building Energy and Environment Division (BEED) of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Delgoshaei’s research interests center on applying subfields of artificial intelligence such as knowledge representation and reasoning, and machine and reinforcement learning for various building applications. She has always been fascinated by the nature of multidisciplinary research where computer science intersects problems in engineering domains. She has been a recipient of the National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) fellowship that partially supported her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park, where she focused on the use of semantic models for cyber physical systems. Before becoming a member of the NIST staff, Dr. Delgoshaei served for two years as a National Research Council (NRC) postdoctoral fellow at NIST.

She is actively involved with the model development of ASHRAE 223p and is also serving as the secretary for both ASHRAE SSPC135, Semantic-Interoperability working group, and TC-1.05, Computer Applications.
