President’s Message – August 2017

Where Do We Go From Here?

The Building Simulation conference that just happened in San Francisco was a big deal for IBPSA-USA. Dozens of volunteer members worked on the planning and execution. Forty sponsors stepped up to provide support. We faced the risk of financial disaster, but the event turned out to be a huge success. Attendance was the biggest ever for a Building Simulation conference, and the energy level among attendees was inspiring.

Now that we’ve had a few days to catch our breath from the big show, it’s time to think about our encore. Where do we go from here?

There’s already a lot going on. Here’s a quick review.

Building Performance Analysis Conference and SimBuild co-organized by ASHRAE and IBPSA-USA. Save the date! Our next, co-organized with ASHRAE conference happens September 24-26, 2018 in Chicago. The call for abstracts will be out soon.

Semi-annual meeting. Our next IBPSA-USA meeting happens Saturday, January 20, 2018 in Chicago, 5:00pm – 9:00pm. Keep on the lookout for an announcement.

Online videos. Webinars hosted by chapters are often recorded. Find them here:

BEST directory. The Building Energy Software Tools (BEST) Directory is hosted by IBPSA-USA:

Advocacy Committee. The IBPSA-USA board is setting up a group to help serve as a pathway for the simulation community to provide input regarding planning of publicly-funded simulation tool development and related activities.

And more. Other IPBSA-USA stuff:

  • Job board. Getting set up; keep on the lookout.
  • Publications archive. This is a web archive of past conference papers and simulation related videos. It’s mostly ready!
  • Mentorship. The Equalities Committee is looking at setting up a mentorship program
  • BEM Library. There is renewed activity in planning and developing updates to the Building Energy Modeling (BEM) Library.

I’m hoping you have more ideas about where IBPSA-USA should be going from here. Please get in touch and let me know.
