Simulation as Nexus
So you wanna be a nexus?
Our members are gaining a unique position at the center of the creation of high performance buildings. Simulation is playing a central and increasingly vital role in integrated design and optimized operation.
A successful high-performance building project needs a team member to serve as a nexus. That person takes input from the team and provides feedback on the impact of decisions. As most of us are aware, many design decisions occur in isolation and without information on performance impact. IBPSA-USA members are well positioned to solve this problem and to take on the role of nexus.
This role of grand nexus, should we wish to accept it, comes with great responsibility. There’s a responsibility for timeliness, a responsibility for credible information, and a responsibility to provide that information in an easily digestible format. If we can be quick, provide useful information, and communicate effectively, then the future for our industry is bright.
To meet these responsibilities, all members of the IBPSA-USA community have a role to play. The role of practitioners on the front line is clear. Software developers, educators, and researchers also have clear roles. None of us succeeds in establishing this central role without the contributions of all.
I think that IBPSA-USA also has a role to play. Together we can help the rest of the building industry understand the vital role of simulation. We can provide training to help meet the rapidly growing demand for people with simulation skills. We can support research and development in new tools and methods. And we can host meetings where we learn and share.
Speaking of meetings, the Building Simulation 2017 conference is almost here: August 6-9 in San Francisco. Many of you are already registered. Those who aren’t yet signed up, please give it your serious consideration; it’s looking like a great program, and there are really interesting pre- and post-conference workshops too. Find the information at http://buildingsimulation2017.org. I hope to see you there.
