Presentation 1: An Intro into Adaptive Thermal Comfort

The presence of natural ventilation in a building’s design can have huge implications on occupant comfort and expectation. This presentation will introduce the concept of the adaptive thermal comfort model, discussing how this model was developed and incorporated into ASHRAE standard 55 Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, and some potential future “nudges” to the adaptive comfort model. The presentation will also review some considerations for natural ventilation design including climate feasibility and mixed mode control schemes.
Presentation 2: A Modeling Workflow for Natural Ventilation

This presentation aims to provide an overall workflow related to Natural ventilation strategies. Natural Ventilation can have a powerful impact on reducing building energy use and improving occupant comfort and can play a key role in allowing buildings to better achieve ambitious sustainability goals. There are many different tools and methods of analysis at a modeler’s disposal, each of which is suited to answer different questions regarding natural ventilation. The presentation will show the differences between tools and methods and their relative strengths and weaknesses, along with a process of selecting the appropriate tool for modeling each natural ventilation application. Best practices for presenting and visualizing natural ventilation modeling outputs will also be shared, specifically for clearly communicating results to both technical and non-technical clients. The presentation will finally detail the uncertainties inherent in natural ventilation modeling, and typical approaches to address these uncertainties.
