Designing Cooler Cities: Sensing, Simulating, and Mitigating Heat at the Human Scale

The IBPSA-USA UPenn Chapter is excited to host Prof. Ariane Middel, Lab Director and Associate Professor at The GAME School, Arizona State University, for a talk on urban heat

Extreme heat affects human health, performance, and well-being. This lecture highlights heat-mitigation strategies from the SHaDE Lab at ASU, focusing on trees, engineered shade, and cool pavements. Field measurements, including the MaRTy and ANDI instruments, microclimate simulations, and real-world experiments are used to evaluate interventions before implementation. Together, these approaches connect urban form, materials, vegetation, local climate, and human thermal response to support cooler, healthier public spaces.

Whether you work in building performance simulation, urban design, landscape, planning, or public health, we’d love to see you there. Please feel free to share this with classmates and colleagues who might be interested.

This event is being held on campus in Meyerson Hall, Room 3N. Alternatively, we welcome you to join via Zoom by registering below.
