Weather Data in Building Performance Modeling

With growing concerns over the progressive impacts of climate change, access to better weather data is an increasingly important consideration for energy modelers. In this virtual ‘round table’ discussion, hosted by DesignBuilder, a distinguished panel of experts with a wealth of experience in weather data will convene to explore the subject and share their insights with you. The session will be moderated by DesignBuilder’s Managing Director Dave Cocking, and our panel of experts are:

Dru Crawley

Dru is the Director of Building Performance Research at Bentley Systems, ASHRAE Director-At-Large, and current IBPSA President. Dru has an impressive track record, having spearheaded developing, implementing, and managing the US Department of Energy’s Commercial Building Initiative - zero-energy commercial buildings (now Better Buildings). Furthermore, Dru has played a pivotal role in managing the research and development of DOE’s building energy software including EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, Energy-10, and DOE-2. Dru’s work alongside Linda Lawrie in developing and curating the widely used library of hourly weather files available at Climate.OneBuilding.org is particularly relevant to this discussion.

Joe Huang

Joe is the President, founder, and co-owner of White Box Technologies. White Box specializes in providing high-quality weather data for numerous global locations. Prior to his current role, Joe worked at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory (LBNL) where he focused on building energy simulations and building energy policy, particularly in the context of international building energy standards. Joe’s passion for providing high-quality weather data led to the development of White Box Technologies’ weather data service, which has subsequently been instrumental in providing weather data for national data sets.

Andy Tindale

Andy is the Chair and co-founder of DesignBuilder Software. With decades of experience in the building energy simulation sector, Andy has amassed a wealth of knowledge through his work in academia, design consultancies, and R&D groups. He is deeply committed to removing unnecessary barriers to the widespread adoption of the latest building simulation technology. Andy has an enduring interest in weather data, matching data to the application, and developing the DesignBuilder Climate Analytics weather data service.

This engaging session will include three brief presentations and a chance to delve into important weather data topics. Our facilitator, Dave, will lead the discussion by asking Dru, Joe, and Andy questions about the evolution of weather data, future climate, data quality concerns, sources of weather data, and how to match the type of data with the appropriate application. Don’t miss this chance to gain insights from the experts and elevate your expertise in weather data modeling!
