IBPSA-USA held its summer semiannual meeting at Hanny’s in Phoenix, AZ, on June 21. While temperatures outside reached 108 °F in the shade, and several IBPSA-USA members brought along thermal imaging cameras, the indoor experience included cool drinks, unusual art and design, and good conversation.
IBPSA-USA president Nathaniel Jones provided brief updates on current association activities and events. These included:
- IBPSA-USA’s efforts to develop a Education Strategic Plan and expand access to high-quality building performance simulation education through a request for proposals.
- EPSI’s Simulation Showcase, a platform for students and early-career professionals to present simulation-based projects in a live webinar series.
- Upcoming webinars Where Your People At? on occupancy modeling by the Research Committee and AI Research for Building Performance Simulation from the Education Committee.
- A reminder to register and book travel for Building Simulation 2025, IBPSA’s international conference in Brisbane Australia.
- Updates on SimBuild 2026 in Minneapolis, with a theme From Models to Reality: Bridging Simulation and Operational Performance.
- IBPSA-USA’s booth at the upcoming Net Zero Conference in Los Angeles on October 1.
The association’s semi-annual meeting was held in conjunction with the ASHRAE Annual Conference. A number of IBPSA-USA members and volunteers received recognition at ASHRAE this year, including:
- Cary Faulkner received the Homer Addams Award, which recognizes a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project at a university.
- Jason Glazer received a Standards Achievement Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service for developing ASHRAE standards and guidelines.
- Bing Dong received an award for “Miscellaneous Electric Loads Prediction By Deep Learning Implementation: An Educational Case Study” along with coauthor Shayan Mirzabeigi.
- Ken Takahashi received an award for “Explainable AI Framework for Model Predictive Control in Energy Management Systems” along with coauthors Hiroyuki Ichikawa and Ryozo Ooka.
- Mohammad Heidarinejad received a Distinguished Service Award for service to ASHRAE.
IBPSA-USA’s next semiannual meeting will take place in Las Vegas in conjunction with the ASHRAE Winter Conference on January 31, 2026.
