Parametric Analysis and Optimisation in Energy Modelling

In energy modeling, the relationship between design options and energy performance can be explored using parametric analysis and optimization techniques. This talk uses a simple example to discuss the process and the tools for parametric simulation, and some important concepts and methods for optimization.

Outline:

1. Introduction

2. Why is parametric modeling useful?

3. Process and tools

4. What is optimization?

5. Key concepts

6. The JEA optimization platform

7. Other ENSIMS tools

SPEAKER

Dr. Yi Zhang  has a background in building services engineering and specializes in energy modeling, parametric simulation, and design optimization. He is best known for his jEPlus and jEPlus+EA tools which are parametric and optimization utilities for EnergyPlus and TRNSYS users. He founded Energy Simulation Solutions Limited (ENSIMS) after a 10-year academic career with substantial research output. ENSIMS offers a unique online computing service (JESS) and a new optimization and data analytics platform (JEA) for energy modelers, both are currently incorporated in DesignBuilder software. On the side, Yi teaches at University College London (UCL) in the Engineering and Architectural Design Master of Engineering Course as an associate professor. He is also an active member of the ASHRAE UK Midlands Chapter and served as its president from 2018 to 2019.
