IBPSA-USA Wisconsin & ASHRAE Madison YEA Crossover Event: Curling & Ice Rink Design

Join us for a joint Madison ASHRAE YEA and IBPSA-USA Wisconsin crossover event March 15th from 4-7pm Central at the McFarland Curling Club. Come try your hand at some curling at 4pm and then stay for a presentation from Shawn Olesen, the Head Ice Technician of USA Curling, about ice surface considerations and also a presentation the design and modeling of ice arenas by Matthew Duffy of IES, Ltd. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided; draft beer available for donation. Please register and consider donating for this community activity and educational event.

Speakers:

Shawn Olesen

Shawn Olesen is the Head Ice Technician at USA Curling. He started the curling ice-making endeavors in 2008. Following the 2008 World Men’s Curling Championship, Olesen went on to work as an ice technician at countless U.S. National Championships and Qualifiers, the Continental Cups in Las Vegas, the 2017 World Junior Curling Championships, 2018 World Men’s Curling Championship, 2018 Pacific-Asian Championships, and the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang. In addition to taking the lead on curating the playing surface for several USA Curling sanctioned events, Olesen is committed to helping strengthen the ice-making pipeline by training the volunteers at events on best practices and techniques, as well as consulting and fielding questions specific to the unique facilities of member clubs across the country.

Matthew Duffy

Matthew Duffy is Vice President of IESVE North America East. Matthew first started driving an ice resurfacing machine (aka Zamboni) in 2004 at the local McFarland Community ice arena (adjacent to the curling club). He then went to the Milwaukee School of Engineering and became the Kern Center Ice Arena assistant manager while completing a degree in mechanical engineering, specializing in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and building simulation software. Matthew has created and supported many ice arena designs and simulations
